| Justified suffering?
I went up to Chicago this past weekend to spend some time with my family there. My cousin Soby died 3 weeks ago in a fatal car accident and I didn't get a chance to go up earlier. I barely knew her and now it's too late or so I thought. When I heard she had died, I was sad of course, but it was mostly because of what the loss would mean to her family than for her passing. All I knew about her, at the time, was that she was a "good" girl - very religious and smart.
This weekend, after spending time with her family and friends, I was amazed by how much I missed out on. She touched so many lives. She inspired and supported so many people in 26 short years. After listening to all these stories from the people who loved her dearly, I regretted not making more of an effort to get to know her - not just because she was my relative, but because she was such a special person.
Usually, I like to point to such occurences as evidence of a cruel and heartless world, but I really did see the beginnings of something else this weekend. There was more than just sorrow in the voices of the people who shared their stories. Could a death really inspire and energize? I know it effected me. I know that I want to do more, be more than what i have settled for.
| just in time for the summer movie season...
Guide to Movie-hopping:
Movie-hopping is my favorite guilty pleasure (tied with the music of Kelly Clarkson). I know it's wrong. I know as a film fanatic that I should support the film industry. I agree, but the summer movie season is always filled with tons of popcorn/fluff/mindless movies that are hard to resist (ex. The Honeymooners, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Herbie: Fully Loaded, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Four, Wedding Crashers...). If I really want to support an actor, director, or movie, I do actually buy tickets for those films.
1. Always buy a tickets for films from indie/creative filmakers who actually challenge audiences. Never hop in small, independent movie theaters.
2. Don't wear flashy clothing. You might look hot in that outfit, but the theater staff will think so too and they're checking you out everytime you walk by. Never wear hawaiian shirts - doesn't have anything to do with movie-hopping, but i've always thought they looked lame.
3. Never pair two holocaust/genocide movies or two foreign/artsy movies - unless you like cranial overloads. Best pairings are comedy/drama, comedy/thriller, comedy/sci-fi, comedy/artsy-fartsy - see the pattern here?
4. Don't stuff soda cans or bottles in your pockets. That silver fox might be a little impressed, but no one else. If you buy a drink from the concession stand, no one will suspect that you're a movie-hopper, because they expect hoppers to be cheap teens.
5. Sneaking in food is like the icing on the cake (which would be an excellent choice). Unless you're feeling gutsy, no indian food, fried chicken, or any other foods which emit strong scents. A large purse is essential for sneaking in food. Candy (Reeses pb cups) or fast food (Taco Bell mexi-melts mmmm....) is the best.
6. Prepare - plan out second movie options with suitable timings in advance. You never want more than a 20 minute difference between movies. Best places to spend that time - movie arcade, concessions, or in the theater. Worst place - the bathroom, that's just wierd.
Have fun and if you get caught, I don't know you.
| UPDATED:
What do you do when you've pissed off someone, you bribe them to love you .
FBI memo reports Guantanamo guards flushing Koran Official FBI reports are now confirming the original reports of desecration of the Koran and humiliation of detainees during prayers. Why is this important? They are prisoners after all - right? Many of these Guantanamo detainees have been held for years without any official charges or representation by lawyers. This could be anyone - your brother, your father, me.
These reports seem to establish the veracity of the original Newsweek story. Why was the story retracted? How did the Bush administration prove their case to the publishers? We are fighting to "free" the Iraqi people, yet the freedom of our press corp seems to be in danger.
What's your source?
No industry has done more to lose our trust (other than maybe the government) in the last few years. To fearlessly challenge and question authority - the mantra of the early punk movement seems to have been lost on the Novaks and Scarboroughs of the world. Sure, there has been coverage of the documented bribes, media implants, and creative reporting, but these traces of a conscious are not nearly enough to restore our faith in these supposed truth tellers. Whether it be Fox News, CBS, or Newsweek, when did the media become merely mindless drones is some sort of federal Matrix?
After last week's damaging story on the desecration of the Koran as an interrogation technique, our favorite government goons, in Soprano-like fashion, seem to have executed a quick hit on Newsweek. After reports of international protests and our ever shrinking credibility, there was no other choice for the Bush Administration than to quickly squash this story. An official denial would never appease the masses, so why not pressure the source of the story to retract it? Genius!
Thank god, there are still some reporters who have decided to keep their testicles intact. The Nation has released a story today on reports by former detainees of these disgusting methods of intimidation. Please take a few minutes to read it and decide for yourself: http://story.news.yahoo.com/s/thenation/132550 .

"In a haze, a stormy haze, I'll be round, I'll be loving you always, always, Here I am and I'll take my time, Here I am and I'll wait in line always, always." --coldplay.parachutes
What more could anyone say to you? What more would you need to hear? It's so pure.

| My first music festival
I'm hoping that this summer will bring with it my first outdoor music festival experience. After forgiving my friends for denying me my first Coachella, I have convinced/guilted them to making the trip to either Atlanta or Austin and possibly both.
Imagine being in the middle of a throng of people as the music of one of your favorite bands pulsates through the crowd. Actually, at that point it's not even about the music, it's all about the energy of the crowd. In a past live, I must have been a hippie.
If you're also going, please give me the required nod, but don't attempt to make contact. ;)
